National Immunization Awareness Month

August is National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM), an annual observance dedicated to promoting vaccination for people of all ages. Sponsored by the CDC, NIAM encourages conversations with trusted health care providers about staying up to date on vaccines and understanding their lifesaving benefits.

Vaccination is one of the most effective public health tools available. Immunization helps prevent serious diseases like measles, polio, influenza, and pneumococcal pneumonia. Globally, vaccines prevent between 3.5 and 5 million deaths each year. In the United States, they are estimated to prevent around 2.5 million deaths annually.

One of the key goals of NIAM is to emphasize that vaccines are important throughout every stage of life. Each week in August highlights a different group, including infants, children, pregnant women, adolescents, and adults. The overall message remains consistent: immunization benefits everyone.

Although vaccines are rigorously tested to ensure safety and effectiveness, misinformation can still lead to hesitation. NIAM provides an opportunity to encourage honest conversations and clarify common concerns, especially regarding COVID-19, HPV, the flu, and other routine vaccinations.

What you can do this August:

  • Review your vaccination status and speak with a healthcare provider if you have questions
  • Share reliable information from the CDC or your local health department
  • Remind family and friends to stay protected, especially as school and travel season ramps up

NIAM is more than a date on the calendar. It serves as a reminder that protecting ourselves and our communities starts with informed choices. By staying up to date on vaccines and helping others do the same, we help build a healthier future for everyone.
