Nurses Week 2026: Celebrating the Power of Nurses

Every year, National Nurses Week gives us a moment to pause and recognize the people who carry so much of healthcare forward. In 2026, Nurses Week is observed from May 6–12, with this year’s theme, The Power of Nurses™, highlighting the incredible impact nurses make in hospitals, clinics, schools, communities, long-term care settings, correctional facilities, and everywhere care is needed.

At Accountable Healthcare, we know that nursing is more than a profession. It is presence, skill, compassion, judgment, and strength all working together in moments that matter. Nurses are often the steady voice, the quick thinker, the advocate, the comfort, and the person who keeps moving even when the shift is long and the day is heavy.

Why Nurses Week Matters

Nurses Week is more than a celebration on the calendar. It is a reminder of how deeply nurses shape patient care and healthcare outcomes every day. From bedside care to leadership, education, case management, public health, and advanced practice, nurses bring expertise into every part of the healthcare system.

This year’s theme, The Power of Nurses™, feels especially meaningful because it speaks to what so many already know: nurses do not just support healthcare, they help lead it. Their work touches patients and families in ways that are immediate, personal, and lasting.

A Brief History of Nurses Week

National Nurses Week has deep roots in the effort to formally recognize the nursing profession. Early attempts to establish a national day for nurses date back to the 1950s. Over time, that recognition grew into the observance we know today.

The dates of May 6–12 are now permanent. Nurses Week begins on National Nurses Day, May 6, and ends on May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, widely recognized as the founder of modern nursing. These dates help honor both the history of the profession and the nurses making a difference right now.

The week also includes additional recognition moments, including National Student Nurses Day on May 8 and National School Nurse Day, which is observed on the Wednesday within National Nurses Week.

The Power Behind Every Shift

The power of nurses shows up in ways that are easy to see and in ways that often happen quietly. It is in the calm explanation before a procedure, the careful assessment that catches a change, the encouragement given to a patient who feels overwhelmed, and the teamwork that keeps care moving.

It is also in the resilience nurses bring to demanding environments. Healthcare changes constantly, and nurses continue to adapt, lead, advocate, and provide care with a level of commitment that deserves recognition far beyond one week.

Thank You to Nurses Everywhere

During Nurses Week 2026, we proudly celebrate the nurses who show up every day with dedication, compassion, and purpose. Your work matters. Your voice matters. Your impact reaches further than you may ever know.

From all of us at Accountable Healthcare, thank you for the care you provide, the lives you touch, and the strength you bring into every shift.

This week, and every week, we celebrate The Power of Nurses™.
