Tips for a Healthy Summer

Welcome to the sunniest season of the year! At Accountable Healthcare, we value our healthcare professionals. Below are a few tips so you can make the most of the season without compromising on health and well-being.

Stay hydrated. Drink water (fluoridated tap or unsweetened bottled or sparkling) instead of sugary or alcoholic drinks to reduce calories and stay safe. Add pieces of fruit to water and other beverages for extra flavor. Replenish Electrolytes: Use sports drinks or electrolyte tablets during intense activities, especially in hot weather.

Eat healthy foods to support muscles, strengthen bones, and boost immunity. Choose Water-Rich Foods such as cucumbers, watermelons, strawberries, and lettuce which are high in water content to boost hydration and nutrition.

Use shade, wide-brimmed hats, clothing that covers, and broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 for sun protection. When outdoors, wear sunglasses that block at least 99% of ultraviolet A and B rays. Sunglasses can help prevent cataracts, as well as wrinkles around the eyes.

Use insect repellent, wear long-sleeved shirts, and long pants to prevent mosquito bites and ticks. Apply sunscreen before insect repellent. After you come indoors, check your clothing, body, and pets for ticks.

From swimming laps at the local pool to catching waves at the beach, water activities are a great way to stay active and cool. However, water also presents significant risks if proper safety measures are not followed. Drowning and water-related injuries can happen to anyone, regardless of age or experience level. Review the basics of water safety, so you can enjoy your favorite aquatic adventures with peace of mind.

Summer is the perfect time to get out and enjoy physical activities. Immediate health benefits include stronger bodies, better sleep, and reduced anxiety/stress levels. Choose activities that you enjoy-biking, walking in nature, swimming, or pickle ball-an addictive game for all ages, not just the seniors.

Summer can be one of the most enjoyable times of the year—if you approach it responsibly. By staying hydrated, safeguarding against the sun, knowing the signs of heat-related illnesses, and practicing smart behavior around water and on the road, you will be set for a fun-filled, safe season. Enjoy the beautiful summer weather!
